In the Pursuit of Function: Let’s Use Water!

Location & Dates

  • Sanlucar de Barrameda, Spain
  • July 15, 2012 to July 20, 2012

One day in the week long International Conference on Hydrotherapy

Note: Conference is in Spanish

This workshop will discuss the use of water in improving a child’s functional abilities on land. Recognizing that chronic disability presents challenges to the child and family, it is important to integrate fun and recreational pursuits in therapy. Water is an excellent way to provide this opportunity! Task analysis is presented in order to make each therapy session as effective and efficient as possible towards the identified outcome or task for this child. Understanding and comparing essential components of a task to the strengths and challenges a child brings to the session allows the child to focus on task completion. Experiential learning will emphasize the necessity of building core strength as a foundation.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify a functional outcome (task) appropriate for a child and / or their family.
  2. analyze a task for the essential components for task completion
  3. compare the essential components of the identified task to the child’s strengths and challenges
  4. describe how the functional use of ones’ extremities is dependent on core strength
  5. illustrate 4 strategies in water to increase core strength
  6. recognize and illustrate 4 strategies in the water using suspended vertical to improve core strength
